How do I soften hard well water?
Calcium and magnesium dissolved out of carbonate rock leave scale in kettles, heaters and fixtures, and stop soap from lathering.
How you notice it
- White crust on kettles, shower heads and taps
- Soap and shampoo will not lather
- Spotted glassware and stiff laundry
- Water heater elements failing early
Why it happens
Groundwater in limestone, dolomite and glacial till dissolves calcium and magnesium. Anything above 180 mg/L as CaCO3 is very hard.
The fix
- Lab test for hardness, iron and manganese first — resin sizing depends on it
- Ion-exchange softener sized on grains per day, not on tank size
- Remove iron ahead of the softener so the resin does not foul
- Leave one hard cold tap for drinking and garden use
